10 tips for a healthy lifestyle

How to live a healthy life

We live in a fast-paced world that makes it difficult to get enough sleep, consume too much alcohol, smoke cigarettes, and eat too much. We don't properly care for our bodies.

When you work full time and have to balance your exercise and diet, it can be very difficult to create a healthy lifestyle. Stress makes it even more difficult. Our minds tell us we can't handle this situation any longer so we feel guilty and give in.

If you feel something is wrong with the body, it is probably. Talk to your doctor about your condition. If nothing is abnormal, it might be stress due to your job.

People believe they are lucky because they can go to the gym every day or have friends who keep them fit. They are fortunate. Those people don’t have any problems. They got everything under control. I wish everyone could become like them. Unfortunately, many of us don’t know how to manage our personal and work lives. Many people develop bad habits that eventually lead to disease such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Here are some ways to improve your daily life.

  1. Get adequate sleep - 7 hours a day minimum, 8 hours maximum. You should be able to sleep in a proper position and avoid caffeine the hour before you go to bed. Caffeine blocks the production of melatonin hormones and makes it harder to fall asleep. Make sure your bedroom is dark and clean. If you work late at night, make sure you have blackout curtains.
  2. Eat healthy. Have breakfast every morning. Avoid sugary products, fried foods, white breads, and processed food. Lunch should include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A good snack option for afternoon is to include protein-rich snacks like nuts, seeds, beans and dairy products. Avoid unhealthy snacks such as chips, candies or cookies, cakes, sodas, and other sweets.
  3. Drink lots of water. We don't have enough. Water helps us to burn more calories, keeps our skin looking young and supple, flushes toxins from our system and improves digestion. Six glasses of water per day will help you lose weight quicker. The best way of determining your hydration is to check the color in your urine. Dehydrated is yellow, orange dehydrated slightly; normal pink urine; overhydrated red urine; and clear urine indicates highly-hydrated.
  4. Exercise - Regular physical activity has been proven to increase energy levels and reduce depression. Walking is an easy way to improve your mood. Even though walking looks simple, it requires effort and concentration. Your brain must be able to concentrate on walking, while taking deep breaths and slowing down. A 30 minute walk at a moderate pace for about 100 calories can burn between 100-150 calories. Start slow, and then increase the pace. To prevent injuries, be sure to stretch after exercising.
  5. Positive thinking is key to mental health. Positive thinking makes it easier to create a happy space within yourself. Negative thoughts drain our energy and cause anxiety. Keep your motivation high by focusing on the things you want to do. If you feel overwhelmed by all these new tasks, break down each task into small steps. You will fail occasionally, but you can always get up and try again.
  6. You must learn to say No - Too often we get so busy we forget how much time is wasted on things that are not important. It is important that you learn to say no when necessary. However, saying "no", does not necessarily mean you are rude. A No means that you can't take care of something now. You will always find a way to complete the task later. You should set limits. Ask for assistance from someone else. Or simply delegate this work to someone else.
  7. Take care your body. Keep track of what you eat. Eating healthier foods will boost your metabolism and help you shed those extra pounds. You should avoid eating too many oily and heavy foods, as they tend to increase cholesterol. Three meals and two snacks are a good rule of thumb. Aim to consume 2000-2500 calories each day.
  8. Meditation can be a great stress relief and can help reduce anxiety. The best way to let your mind relax is to just sit still, with your eyes closed. This exercise will allow you to have clarity of thought which can be very useful in making decisions. Practicing meditation regularly will make you calmer and happier.
  9. Don't skip breakfast - Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast may lead to overeating during lunchtime. You don't have to wait until noon to enjoy a healthy breakfast. Eating breakfast increases your energy level and helps you to control your hunger.
  10. Make sure you eat clean food. Food has a greater impact on your mood than you realize. Avoid junk food or any food items that contain preservatives or artificial ingredients. These foods make your body feel acidic, and can trigger cravings. A variety of fruits and vegetables is rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that can help improve overall health.
